John Greig Jr., Philadelphia-based artist, has many interests, all rooted in a strong commitment to the processes of making.
Before beginning his education as an artist, John worked as a welder, cabinet maker, foundry technician, mold maker and tombstone setter/cutter. John’s interest in process-based art led him to study sculpture and printmaking at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was here that he became mindful of using our human proportions evident in architecture and all that we make. With his wide variety of work related technical training he became a natural fit to manage the Academy's sculpture facilities, and later to teach classes in found materials, woodshop fundamentals and wood-based sculpture.
As a proponent of tool and process driven making, John co-founded Traction Co. more than ten years ago. Traction Co. is a cooperative workshop and shared studio space in West Philadelphia. However, it is through a daily art-making practice that John maintains his personal connection to craft.
